When installing knobs on the corner of the face frame for shaker style cabinets, leave 2 1/2 inches of space between the top (for base cabinets) and at the bottom (for upper cabinets). Cup and tab pulls will follow the same sizing recommendations as bar pulls however, their placement will vary. So where do cabinet knobs and pulls go It’s a question we don’t usually ask ourselves until the moment we need to actually install cabinet hardware. For base cabinet doors, knobs and pulls should both be installed opposite the hinges in order to improve leverage. Any drawer broader than 32 inches will require a pull longer than 12 inches. When installing them, divide the width of the drawer frame into thirds and then place each knob to the left and right marks. Drawers 16-32 inches wide are best embellished with two smaller pulls 5-7 inches in length or one larger pull 9-12 inches long. Consider 2 knobs for drawers that are 24" inches or wider.
If your cabinetry is inset, do you consider the width of the drawer or the actual width of the cabinet (stationary frame and all) when deciding on the length of your pull? We suggest you simply go by the width of the drawer because viewing the installation, you'll notice the tiny gaps created, which delineate a drawer, so it would be best if the hardware is centered within this frame. We follow a form follows function philosophy because we liked being able to hang a dish towel on the draw pulls - not possible on the clamshells.
The pulls were used on upper drawers and broom closet doors depending on door size. For a 12" inch drawer use a 4" inch pull or for a 24" inch drawer, use an 8" pull. We went with 4 different hardware pieces: knobs clamshells and two sizes of pulls. Want a balanced look? Pulls should be about 1/3 of the width of a drawer.
